Rising Damp

Rising damp occurs when moisture from the soil travels upward through the porous brickwork and mortar of a building via capillary action. This can lead to damaged plaster, blistering paint, and continued moisture absorption unless treated effectively.

At Flick Damp Proofing, we use a trusted method backed by over 50 years of expertise: injecting a chemical damp-proof course under high pressure (170–350 kPa) into precisely drilled holes along the affected brickwork. This process is conducted in a continuous line, either at or just above the internal floor or external soil level. Approved by the British Board of Agrément and compliant with BS 6576: 1985 standards, our method is proven to stop rising damp and protect your property.

Common Causes of Rising Damp

  • Deterioration of the original damp-proof course (e.g., bitumen or PVC materials).
  • Incorrect placement or omission of the damp-proof course during construction.
  • Damage or bridging of the damp-proof course.

If the damp-proof course is compromised, moisture rises through the walls, depositing salts that further damage plaster and paint. These salts can also absorb moisture from the air, exacerbating the problem.

With Flick Damp Proofing’s specialized solutions, you can prevent rising damp and preserve the structural integrity of your property.

Lateral Damp

Lateral damp occurs when moisture penetrates walls horizontally, typically due to a deteriorated, omitted, or incorrectly installed vertical damp-proof course. Symptoms include; Crystallized salts (efflorescence) on walls, Flaking or blistering paint, Cracked or damaged plaster.

Flick Damp Proofing treats lateral damp with a “tanking” process that removes damaged plaster, applies a durable SIKA waterproof barrier, and replasters with a damp-resistant mix. If needed, silicone injection is used to prevent rising damp, ensuring reliable, long-lasting protection.

Common Locations for Lateral Damp

Lateral damp is most often found in areas where the vertical damp-proof course is compromised, such as:

  • Areas with ground levels higher than the damp-proof course
  • Split-level constructions
  • Basements
  • Plastered plinths
  • Flower boxes
  • Around showers and baths

Plinth brickwork, located between the ground and the damp-proof course, is designed to handle moisture. However, when plinths are plastered, moisture can pass through the wall, leading to damaged plaster and efflorescence.

With Flick Damp Proofing, you can prevent lateral damp and protect your property’s walls from further damage.

Internal / External Drains

Effective drainage is crucial for protecting your property from water damage. Flick Damp Proofing offers comprehensive solutions to control surface runoff and groundwater ingress.

What is Surface Runoff

Surface runoff occurs when rainwater flows over the ground surface rather than infiltrating into the soil. This can happen due to factors like impervious surfaces (such as roads and buildings), heavy rainfall, or saturated soil. Surface runoff can lead to soil erosion, and flooding.

What is Groundwater Ingress

Groundwater ingress occurs when excess water in the soil exerts pressure on a building’s structure, causing water to seep through walls and floors. This can lead to dampness, and structural damage. By installing effective drainage systems, we can mitigate the risks associated with groundwater ingress.

By addressing these issues, we can help you protect your property from water damage and ensure its longevity.
